JANE EYRE (1944)

Jane Eyre written by Charlotte Bronte in 1847 under the pen name of Currer Bell has been made into many film and television versions.
Jane Eyre covers the story of a small plainly looking girl who is very intelligent and after living with her cruel aunt and cousins after being orphaned is sent to a harsh English school called Lowood School, the story follows her upbringing at the school until she becomes a young adult where she secures a postion of governess at Thornfield manor and falls in love with employer Mr Rochester.

After learning of a sinister secret at Thornfield she leaves but inevitably returns to a change Thornfield and Rochester. The story deals with many aspects of social criticism. One of the best versions is the 1944 version featuring Orson Welles as Mr Rochester and Joan Fontaine as Jane Eyre.

REBECCA (1940)

Another file featuring the brilliant Joan Fontaine.  Also staring Lawerence Olivier who play Max de Winter, who marries his second wife Mrs De Winter is haunted by the beautful first wife Rebeccca whose legacy is held by the disturbing housekeeper Mrs Danvers.

Mystery surrounds the death of the first wife which comes to light when her body is found.  Everything is not as it seems though!!  Another BMC favorite - Rebecca

WUTHERING HEIGHTS (1939)

The Eranshaw family who live on a Yorkshire farm recieve an addition to the family when the father comes back from a trip to the city with a little ragged boy whose name is Heathcliff. The daughter, Cathy accepts the boy but resentment is rife with the son Hindley who persists in constantly bullying Heathcliff. After the death of the parents Cathy and Heathcliff run wild as they grow up together and a deep love connection blossoms.

Cathy now a young beauty is drawn to rich dapper dressing Edgar Linton who when compared to Heathcliff seems a more attractive option. Heathcliff after the devastating blow of Cathy's change of affections and attention runs away only to return later, bringing revenge and resentment along with him. An outstanding drama that encompasses, hate, jealousy, revenge and everlasting love that will stand the test of time. This 1939 version of Wuthering Heights stars Merle Oberon as Cathy and Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff.
